Netflix, please get some new content to stream, and stop messing with the stuff you do have

I’ve been a Netflix fan for a long time. When it first came out, I was on the 3-disc plan, and loved it for several years. I had a lot of free time back then, so I’d be able to watch them immediately, and see a ton of movies for a ridiculously cheap price. Then they came out with ‘Watch Instantly’, which lets you stream movies instantly without waiting for the disc to get mailed and I thought I was in heaven. Of course, as we’re all starting to see, there are quite a few problems with things over at the streaming department.

Can we get some new movies please?!

By far my biggest problem with Netflix right now is that their Instant movie selection is just horrible for new releases. Horrible is actually too kind. Out of the first 30 results for ‘New Arrivals’, there were only 7 movies from 2010 or 2011:

  • The Karate Kid (I’m still fighting the internal battle of whether to watch this or not)
  • Superman/Shazam!: The Return of Black Adam (Comics & animation are cool, although not a big fan in this case)
  • My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend (Some romantic comedy I’ve never heard of)
  • WWE: The Big Show: A Giant’s World (Meh…)
  • No One Killed Jessica (No idea, high ratings though, and it’s in Hindi)
  • My Name Is Khan (Wait, another Hindi movie?)
  • Freakonomics (The book was great, I may actually watch this one)

The ‘new’ choices are pretty slim pickings, and besides ‘The Karate Kid’, not exactly for a mainstream

audience. Hmm, what to watch here, not sure. Maybe I’ll look more closely at some of the other choices, like ‘Leprechaun 5: In the Hood’, from 2000. Yes, that’s really one of the choices. I still can’t believe that someone gave that movie the green light, or that Netflix has it in the first page of results for ‘new’ stuff. What about ‘Meet The Parents’, oh yeah that’s right, I already saw it 11 years ago. I think I’m done here.

If I hop over to the ‘New Releases’ on Blu-Ray, I see a whole new story. It’s filled with actual newish movies that a decent amount of people would normally want to see. We have some ‘Toy Story 3’, a little ‘Date Night’, some ‘Iron Man 2’ and on and on. What’s the deal here Netflix?! I know it’s easy to sit at my computer and criticize, and there must be business reasons or expenses involved here, but  that doesn’t mean I can’t complain. Whatever the reason, pleeeeeease Netflix, try to work on it.

Inconsistent, and random availability of content

I’m a huge fan of The Matrix. A few months ago, I was in the mood for a quick hit of Keanu, and I discovered that it wasn’t available to stream. What was more confusing was that ‘The Matrix Reloaded’ and ‘The Matrix Revolutions’ both were. Oh wait, I just checked again, and now none of them are available.

Along these same lines, let’s talk about Farscape. First it’s there, and I’m watching an episode every day, then out of nowhere, every season is just gone.

But wait, there’s more. I wanted to watch ‘Blade Runner: The Final Cut’, but that’s not available to stream. However, ‘Blade Runner: Theatrical Cut’ IS available. I don’t want to get into it here, but they’re very different, and I only want to watch The Final Cut. The point is, if Netflix got the rights to one, in what odd world do they not get rights to the other? It’s the same movie, just a different edit. Same movie studio, same everything…how do they have one and not the other?! This is all confusing and frustrating.

Anyway Netflix, I love you, and I hate you. I can’t live without you, and I never want to log in again. First you give, and then you take. Why must life be so complicated?
